Today's poker star is the American legend Amarillo Slim.
Born in Johnson, Arkansas, United States, Amarillo Slim came into the world on December 31, 1928. In his lifetime, the American was one of the greatest poker professionals in the world. Known for his gaming skills and proposition bets, Amarillo Slim was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in the year 1992, earning the 1972 World Series of Poker Main Event title to his resume.

The American Thomas Austin Peterson Jr. Slim, known as Amarillo Slim, used to be a traveler who toured the United States in search of good poker games, along with legends Doyle Brunson and Sailor Roberts. Players' demand for good games led to the introduction of the Texas Hold'em format that is known today.

Between these passages in the United States, Slim was present at the first edition of the World Series of Poker, in 1970, accompanied by the legends: Johnny Moss, Sailor Roberts, Doyle Brunson, Puggy Pearson, Crandell Addington and Carl Cannon. However, his personal victory came two years after his WSOP debut. In 1972, Slim wore his first World Series of Poker bracelet when he won the Main Event of the edition. After that, the grinder began appearing on several talk shows around the country, such as The Tonight Show. In addition, Slim also landed a small role in Robert Altman's 1974 film California Split. With that, Slim also had a guest appearance on the show I've Got a Secret, where the secret of the occasion involved losing over $100 thousand in one poker night.
WSOP achievements may have made Slim think big. Amarillo ended up creating in 1979 his own tournament series, Amarillo Slim's Super Bowl of Poker. The series was active for several years, but ended up ending in 1991.
In addition to the 1972 achievement, the player also took home three more World Series of Poker bracelets. The second bracelet came in the year 1974, when participating in the $1,000 No Limit Hold'em. The third bracelet was won at Pot Limi U$S 5,000 Omaha in 1985. His last bracelet came in 1990 at Pot Limit U$5,000 Omaha. However, in 2000 Slim hit the crossbar when he faced star Phil Ivey in the WSOP's $2,500 Pot Omaha, ending up with a silver medal.
Between January and February 1980, Slim was responsible for hosting the Second Annual Poker Classic, which was considered the second largest poker tournament at the time. After a few years, the series changed its name to Super Bowl of Poker and ended in 1991.
In his final years of life, Slim was robbed on the morning of October 4, 2006. On that occasion, the legend was robbed at gunpoint, where the thug fired three shots at the grinder's car as he fled. As early as January 28, 2007, Slim was robbed at gunpoint in his own home. Also, on January 22, 2009, Peterson was eventually beaten and had a hood placed over his head, when he ended up charging a gambling debt.
However, on April 29, 2012, colon cancer was responsible for Slim leaving this life. The player passed away at age 83 in Amarillo, Texas. In his uptime, Slim had already accumulated over half a million dollars at the time, which is a huge sum for those times.
